The General Secretariat of the League of Arab States (Social Affairs Sector – Human Rights Administration) intends to hold a “Symposium of Enjoying Civil Society Organizations as an Observer with the Permanent Arab Committee for Human Rights – The Role of Civil Society Organizations in Times of Crisis” on the afternoon of Monday 22/6/2020 via technology “Video conference.”
In this context, Ambassador Haifa Abu Ghazaleh, Assistant Secretary-General – Head of the Social Affairs Sector, stated that the symposium is being held in a highly accurate circumstance in which mankind is witnessing a global health crisis with dire consequences, especially at the economic and social levels, which requires concerted efforts and the contribution of society In all its categories to promote basic rights, uphold the spirit and values of solidarity and social solidarity, something that calls for the active participation of civil society organizations accredited in member states, foremost among which are those enjoying observer status with the Permanent Arab Committee for Human Rights.
The symposium aims mainly to open a dialogue with civil society organizations that are invited to stand on, among other things, what is the role of these organizations in times of crisis, especially in the awareness, educational and preventive field, while also highlighting the existing partnerships in this regard with both the private sector and the scientific and academic community.
It is worth noting that the League’s Council at the ministerial level adopted during its regular session (151) held on 6/3/2019 the “Arab Declaration on the Right and Responsibility of Civil Society Organizations to Promote and Protect Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms” that applies to civil society organizations legally accredited in the countries Members of the League of Arab States, and recognizes the important role and valuable work of these organizations in contributing to the promotion and promotion of human rights and fundamental freedoms.
