HRITC calls for an end to the violations against activists and the protection of the human rights movement
The Human Rights Information and Training Center (HRITC) said that the civil society movement was the most prominent victim of the ongoing war in Yemen.
Furthermore, that it has been at the forefront of direct targeting of the Houthi militia since its coup against legitimate state institutions in 2014.
A statement by the Human Rights Information and Training Center (HRITC), a regional organization that has a consultative status with the Economic and Social Council at the United Nations, stated that a systematic process targeted all colours of the human rights movement’s spectrum, and worked to liquidate the presence of Yemeni organizations active in several ways, including arbitrary arrests, police prosecutions, including the closure and confiscation of property. Even restrictions on the work of organizations, which did not spare the United Nations institutions themselves in Sana’a.
On International Human Rights Day, the HRITC showed a video about the gravity of what the civil society movement has been subjected to in Yemen, noting that dozens of activists and workers in non-governmental organizations have lost their lives, including workers at the center whose headquarters in Sana’a and Taiz have been bombed and looted.
Dozens of activists lost their livelihoods and became homeless. The Houthi militia continued its systematic violations to the point of issuing death sentences for human rights activists and media professionals.
The Center called on the international community, especially the Security Council and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, to work to address the campaigns targeting the human rights movement in Yemen and to protect human rights activists.
