The International Criminal Court recognizes its jurisdiction over Palestine

On Friday, February 5, 2021, the First Pre-Trial Chamber of the International Criminal Court issued by majority its decision regarding the Prosecutor’s request regarding territorial jurisdiction over Palestine. The decision stipulated that the Palestinian territories fall within its jurisdiction and it is a state party to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court and extends to the territories it occupies Israel since 1967, which is Gaza and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.
Several human rights defenders in Palestine and the Arab region welcomed this decision, describing it as a historic decision, and in a statement by the Director of the Human Rights Information and Training Center (HRITC), Arafat Al-Rufaid said that this decision is the starting point for working towards opening the investigation and prosecuting Israel regarding the war crimes it has committed and that these crimes will not be subject to a statute of limitations.
He stated that the next battle before the jurists and jurists, especially in the Arab human rights movement, will be legal before the court in The Hague and that this file must be prepared and prepared, in order for Israel to condemn its crimes against humanity and redress the victims.
