HRITC monitors the discussion of Kuwait’s periodic report before the Arab Human Rights Committee
The Human Rights Information and Training Center (HRITC) participated in the meetings of the Arab Human Rights Committee, which were held at the headquarters of the Arab League, headed by Counselor Jaber Al-Marri, head of the committee, and in the presence of its members.
The meeting discussed the first periodic report of the State of Kuwait, which was presented by a team headed by Ambassador Talal Al-Mutairi, Assistant Foreign Minister. The report dealt with the progress made in the field of human rights in the State of Kuwait in the civil, political, economic, and social fields, including the empowerment of women in senior positions of the state, equality, and non-discrimination.
The report also addressed the issue of human trafficking, the right to health, and the independence of the judiciary in Kuwait.
Discussions touched on the right to life and physical integrity, freedom of opinion and expression, the right to development, the right to work, association and professional unions, and the right to education.
The Center participated in its capacity as an observer enjoying consultative status with the Arab League, and was represented by a member of the Center’s advisory board, the journalist and writer Magdy Helmy.
It is noteworthy that Kuwait submitted its report in 2019, but its discussion was postponed due to the Corona pandemic, and the committee is scheduled to discuss at its next meeting the report of Iraq and Yemen.
