A Continuous Siege In An Intermittent Truce – March 2023 report
March 2023 Report:
The field team of the Human Rights Information and Training Center monitored 41 violations during the month of March 2023 in Taiz Governorate, of which the Houthi militia committed 30 violations, 5 of them were committed by gunmen outside the framework of the state, 4 cases were committed by unknown gunmen, one case was committed by members of the government army, and one case occurred following clashes between Members of the government army and militants outside the framework of the state.
Siege of Taiz
Taiz is one of the Yemeni cities that suffers from one of the longest periods of siege in modern history. The blockade began in April 2015 and lasted for several years, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis and deteriorating economic and social conditions in the city.
The blockade is the process of restricting entry and exit from the city and preventing the arrival of humanitarian aid and basic goods. The Houthi forces closed the land ports and separated the coast of Taiz from the city, which restricted the movement of trade and economic exchange and the movement of citizens, and to pass between the regions of Taiz, the citizen must pass through very bumpy mountain roads.
The lives of the residents of Taiz have been greatly affected as a result of the blockade. Basic services such as electricity, water, health and education have stopped. The prices of basic commodities have skyrocketed, and it has become difficult for families to provide food, medicine, and essential supplies. Cases of hunger, disease and the spread of infectious diseases increased among the population, and children, women and the elderly were exposed to difficult conditions.
Despite international efforts to end the blockade and alleviate the suffering in Taiz, the blockade continues and continues to negatively affect the lives of the population. The issue requires greater international efforts to lift the blockade and provide assistance.
