The Human Rights Information and Training Center warns of a humanitarian disaster in Taiz and calls for an end to the targeting of civilians
Taiz, Yemen — The Human Rights Information and Training Center (HRITC) has warned of a worsening humanitarian situation in Taiz amid what the organization describes as a prolonged blockade imposed on the city since 2015 and a recent escalation in military activity. The developments have raised concerns about civilian safety and access to food, medicine, and essential medical services.
Warnings of Increased Shelling in Residential Areas
In an urgent statement, the center said its monitors had documented indications of attacks affecting food and medical supplies, vital facilities, healthcare facilities, and densely populated residential neighborhoods near front lines. It warned that the risks facing civilians were increasing.
Calls to Ensure Humanitarian Aid Access
The center called on the international community, the United Nations, and humanitarian and human rights organizations to take urgent action to protect civilians and ensure the unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance and medical supplies. It also called for an immediate halt to shelling that puts residents’ lives at risk.
Calls for Investigations and Accountability
The center stressed the need to investigate reported violations and hold those responsible accountable. It stated that deliberate attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure, as well as indiscriminate shelling of residential areas, may constitute serious violations of international humanitarian law and, depending on the facts and evidence, may amount to war crimes.
