118 violations documented by HRITC last December in Taiz

Taiz / Special:

The Human Rights Information and Training Center (HRITC) announced that it has documented 118 cases of violation of civilians in Taiz Governorate during the month of December – 2020.

In its monthly report entitled “Taiz between a bloody siege and the war of removal,” the centre said that its field team was able to document the killing of 23 civilians, including 4 children and a woman, the Houthi militia killed 13 of them, including 4 children and a woman, 7 civilians were killed, including 3 children, by shelling with different missiles. Two civilians were killed by a sniper of the Houthi militia, while a woman was killed by the explosion of a landmine planted by the Houthi militia and another civilian with an explosive device.

Nine civilians were killed by direct bullets of militants outside the state, and one civilian was killed by unidentified gunmen.
The field centre team was able to monitor the injury of 38 civilians, including 6 children and 9 women, the Houthi militia injured 22 of them, including 6 children and 8 women, where 11 civilians, including 8 women and two children, were injured by the militia’s artillery shells, and one civilian was wounded by the explosion of landmines planted by the militia. Besides, one child was wounded by Houthi sniper bullets and 5 civilians, including 3 children, were hit by direct bullets by Houthi gunmen.

Fifteen civilians were also wounded by direct bullets of armed men outside the state, including one woman, and one civilian was wounded by bullets by unidentified gunmen.

Six civilians, including a woman, were wounded by direct bullets, and other civilians were wounded in artillery shelling by individuals affiliated with multiple factions in the government army.

The team documented one case of kidnapping and one case of assault committed by militants outside the state.

The field team monitored 55 cases of violation of public and private property, including 3 cases of public property caused by the Houthi militia, namely Al-Safwa General Hospital, the Teachers Institute and Al-Ahly Club.

In addition, there were 52 cases of violations of private property, where 8 houses were completely damaged, 17 houses were partially damaged, and 12 private vehicles were damaged as a result of the bombing by the Houthi militia, and the militia also blew up 14 civilian homes.

Militants outside the state set fire to 8 private vehicles.

The report indicated that the year 2020 was a year in which the difficulties multiplied for Taiz Governorate, without the world that suffered from the outbreak of the Corona pandemic.

It has suffered from an additional pandemic, especially a compound between the Houthi militia, which has imposed its siege on the city, amid bombing and harassment for 6 years, and a deteriorating security situation in which there are numerous armed groups outside the state, which destabilize security and cause chaos.

The report said that Taiz called for the year to receive the most violent days of the bombing in various neighborhoods, especially the western region, where the old airport, Wadi al-Qadi, and the city of light in the Al-Mudhaffar district, with howitzer, mortar and anti-aircraft missiles, and the Zahra neighborhood in the Salh district was also bombed with an anti-aircraft fire.

The Houthi artillery also targeted known civilian facilities such as Al-Safwa Hospital in the city and the Teachers Institute in the Cairo Directorate with anti-aircraft fire, and bombed the Al-Ahly Club in Taiz during exercises for children and the bombing victim was one of the most prominent sports figures, Captain Nasser Qassem and his son Omran, and three other children were wounded with them.

The bombing included villages such as the village of Al-Ain in Jabal Habashi, targeting densely populated neighborhoods in Asifra in the Cairo District.

The report emphasized that the Houthi militia was the only one, as in previous months, in committing direct crimes and violations against civilians through intense and systematic bombing, sniping, and killing with direct bullets, mines, explosive devices and others.
