Children … The Most Abused Victims in Taiz – July 2023
Human rights in Taiz :
Childhood is still at the forefront of the list of victims of the war, and the siege of Taiz represents the most prominent feature of the war in Yemen.
Children have become the most vulnerable and the ones paying the highest price for a deadly siege that extends into its ninth consecutive year.
The Houthi militias focus their bombing on residential neighborhoods intensively, and the majority of the victims are children. Death mines also find victims among children who fall into the trap of minefields planted on the roads and entrances to villages and cities.
Human rights in Taiz
As the siege intensifies and affects the city’s health services, young people are the first victims of the decline in health standards and the most vulnerable to contracting diseases and the spread of epidemics.
July statistics on the human rights situation in Taiz, according to monitoring and follow-up by the Human Rights Information and Training Center (Hritc) team, show these facts about childhood exposure to systematic violations by the Houthi militias and as a result of the siege imposed on Taiz since 2015.
World Food Program Team Leader/Moayad Hamidi
On July 21, the head of the World Food Program team, Moayed Hamidi, was assassinated and four others were injured in the soil by gunmen outside the framework of the state.
These terrorist acts are considered crimes against humanity and emphasize the need to enhance security and stability in the governorate. Those responsible for these crimes must be held accountable and brought to justice.
Siege of Taiz
Taiz is one of the Yemeni cities that has been under continuous siege since April 2015, and it is imposed by the Houthi rebel forces. This blockade includes cutting off the land, sea and air routes that connect the city to the rest of the world. Houthi forces are closing vital ports and facilities, preventing the entry of humanitarian aid and basic goods.
The lives of the residents of Taiz have been catastrophically affected as a result of this blockade. Basic services such as electricity, water, and health services have stopped, and the supply chain that supplies the city with food, medicine, and fuel has been severed. The prices of basic commodities have risen excessively, and it has become difficult for families to meet their basic needs. In addition, diseases spread and health conditions worsened, exposing children, women and the elderly to serious health risks.
Despite the continuous efforts of humanitarian organizations and the international community to intervene and alleviate the suffering of the residents of Taiz, the siege is still in place and continues to exacerbate the human tragedy in the city. The international community must make greater and more cooperative efforts to lift the blockade and facilitate humanitarian access to the besieged population in Taiz. This requires a comprehensive political solution and constructive dialogue between the warring parties to achieve peace and restore stability in the city.
