General Situation

Taiz Governorate faced significant humanitarian and human rights challenges in 2024 as a result of the ongoing coup war waged by the Houthi militia against the country and the siege imposed by the militia on the city. This has exacerbated the suffering of civilians and led to serious human rights violations.

Taiz residents complain of widespread neglect of the issue of the siege of their city. Human rights and media monitoring and follow-up by international organizations has declined due to the difficult situation Taiz is experiencing as a result of the siege. This decline and lack of attention has even extended to various local organizations.

Human Rights Violations

Several human rights reports documented serious human rights violations in Taiz during 2024. According to Rights Radar, armed militias, including the Houthis, committed approximately 2,368 violations in Yemen, including shelling, mines, and explosive devices. The violations in Taiz Governorate amounted to 146 cases.

Taiz (Arabic: تَعِزّ, romanized: Taʿizz) is a city in southwestern Yemen. It is located in the Yemeni highlands, near the port city of Mocha on the Red Sea, at an elevation of about 1,400 metres (4,600 ft) above sea level. It is the capital of Taiz Governorate.
