The Human Rights Information and Training Center “HRITC” launched its semi-annual report on the humanitarian situation in Taiz, in which it documented the occurrence of about 115 violations against civilians during the first half of this year 2024.
In the report entitled “Taiz.. Continuation of the siege of hunger and thirst”, the center revealed the extent of the violations committed by the various parties managing the conflict in the governorate, led by the Houthi militia, as the cases committed by this militia amounted to 86 violations, followed by gunmen outside the framework of the state, whose violations amounted to about 20 violations, while unknown gunmen committed 6 violations and the violations of individuals affiliated with political factions in the government army amounted to 3 violations.
Right to Life:
The report documented the killing of about 24 civilians, including two women and 8 children. The Houthi militia killed 19 civilians, including two women and 7 children. One child was killed by a mortar shell fired by the Houthi militia. Three civilians, including a child, were killed by sniper fire, and three civilians, including a child, were killed by direct fire from Houthi gunmen.
The Houthi militia liquidated one civilian and ran over another civilian with a military vehicle. Seven civilians, including four children and two women, were killed by Houthi drone strikes. Two civilians were killed by a landmine explosion, and one civilian was killed by torture to death.
Gunmen outside the state killed four civilians, including one child, three of whom were killed by direct fire, one civilian was killed by stabbing with a sharp object, while unidentified gunmen killed one civilian by direct fire.
The field team of the center documented data on 44 civilian injuries during the reporting period, including 17 children and 3 women. The Houthi militia caused 33 civilian injuries, including 3 women and 11 children. 10 civilians, including 4 children, were injured by various shells and missiles. 7 civilians, including 3 children and a woman, were injured by sniper fire. 14 civilians, including 4 children and a woman, were injured by landmine explosions. One civilian was injured by Houthi drone shelling. One civilian was also injured by severe beatings.
Armed men outside the state caused 9 civilian injuries, including 3 children. 5 civilians, including 3 children, were injured by direct fire, 3 civilians were injured by an explosive device, and one civilian was injured by assault.
Unknown gunmen caused two civilian injuries by an explosive device.
“Multiple violations”
Violations continued in Taiz during the first half of this year 2024, and varied to make the Taiz file more painful.
The center said in its report that it documented one kidnapping case committed by members of the government army.
In addition, the team also documented one mass arrest committed by the Houthi militia, 3 assault cases, one committed by the Houthi militia and another committed by gunmen outside the state, and one case of torture committed by unknown gunmen.
Besides, The team monitored 3 assassination cases, including two assassination attempts committed by the Houthi militia and unknown gunmen, while gunmen outside the state carried out the assassination, and monitored one assault on freedom of opinion and expression committed by gunmen outside the state.
“Civilian Objects”
The team also monitored 38 cases of violations of public and private property, including two cases of violations of public property, one of which was caused by the Houthi militia, and the other by gunmen outside the state.
These violations affected 36 private civilian objects, 30 of which were caused by the Houthi militia, including 18 houses and 11 vehicles. The militia caused 5 houses to be completely damaged, 13 houses to be partially damaged, 10 vehicles to be damaged as a result of shelling, and one vehicle to be destroyed as a result of a landmine explosion. The militia also caused another violation. Individuals affiliated with factions in the army caused two cases, one of which was storming a house and the other was raiding a private office. Armed men outside the state caused 3 cases, including partial damage to one house and damage to a vehicle by a hand grenade explosion. Unknown gunmen also caused one case due to the explosion of an explosive device in a vehicle, completely destroying it.
