HRITC condemns the Houthi bombing of Taiz on the first day of the new school year
Taiz /
Today, the city of Taiz received the opening of the new school year, with intense bombing by the Houthi militia on schools and residential neighbourhoods in the east of the city.
According to the field monitoring team of the Human Rights Information and Training Center (HRITC), dozens of shells hit overcrowded residential neighbourhoods such as Al-Thawra Hospital, Al-Komb and Al-Jahmaliyah neighbourhoods, and that the shells were concentrated where the population and schools were very crowded, such as Al-Thalaya School, Al-Mithaq, and the College of Arts.
A statement by HRITC, a regional organization that has a consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. The statement mentioned that the bombing amounted to war crimes committed by the Houthis that systematically target the security population, in overcrowded neighborhoods, and on specific occasions with a large civilian presence, such as the first day of the school year.
In addition, the bombing that began on Sunday morning, fourth of October, caused many damages, and it has not been possible until this moment to complete its inventory.
The Human Rights Information and Training Center (HRITC) called on the United Nations and its special envoy to Yemen to shoulder their responsibilities in protecting civilians and condemning these crimes. Stressing that the international silence and lack of regional support for ending the siege of Taiz is participation in a crime against humanity that history cannot forgive or save the perpetrators from accountability.
HRITC appealed to the United Nations Human Rights Council, which is now meeting in Geneva, to give this issue an important priority.
