The right to asylum between the challenges of integration and return in an international symposium of the International Academy of Human Rights
The International Academy of Human Rights, with partner organizations, the Human Rights Information and
Training Center (HRITC), the Arab Center for Education in International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights, and the Basma International Group for Humanitarian Aid organized an international symposium on “The Right to Asylum between the Challenges of Integration and Return”, in which a large number of human rights specialists participated from various Arab and European countries.
At the beginning of the symposium, His Excellency Ambassador Ezzadin Al-Asbahi, Ambassador of Yemen to the Kingdom of Morocco, pointed out the importance of this issue, which has become one of the most prominent issues of the time, and to work on it from a human rights approach that works to preserve human dignity.
Dr. Mohammed Amin al-Maidani, head of the Arab Center for Education in International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights, Strasbourg/France, addressed the issue of the right to asylum and refugee rights.
Mamoun Jumaa, a member of the Syrian Refugee Committee in Lebanon, reviewed the experience of Syrian refugees in Lebanon, while Dr. Imad Shehadeh, Doctor of International Relations and expert in human development and administrative development – Germany, reviewed the experience of Germany, and Dr. Bahja Jamal, the new Moroccan policies for immigration and asylum.
Furthermore, Ibrahim Alloush spoke about the French experience, and the Jordanian experience was presented by Dr. Abeer Al-Buraim, head of the Habak Center for Training on Human Rights and Development, and spoke about the Yemeni experience in Geneva, activist Lisa Al-Badawi.
Regarding the right of return, the Director-General of Basma International Group, Dr. Gulshan Soglam, presented a paper on the right of return and the challenges it faces. Abdel Nasser Nasraoui, the program coordinator at the Arab Institute for Human Rights in Tunisia, presented the Tunisian experience.
Followed by lawyer Ahmed Badawy, president of the Egyptian Foundation for Refugee Support (EFRR), who presented the Egyptian experience.
The performances concluded with a presentation by Lawyer Hooker Shetou, representative of the Popular Relief in Iraq, about the Iraqi experience.
The seminar, which was held over two consecutive days, included presentations of different experiences in dealing with the asylum file, in addition to the reality of integration and the right of return and the challenges facing it.
The organizers of the symposium stressed that they should formulate the recommendations and outcomes of the symposium within the Academy’s work program in the coming period, as the issue of refugee rights is a top priority for the International Academy of Human Rights. It is worth mentioning that the International Academy of Human Rights is an international institution launched at the initiative of partner organizations and works to raise the capacities of activists in the field of human rights, targeting young researchers in this field.
